Dartmoor’s dramatic landscapes, rolling hills, and ancient woodlands make it an inspiring place to explore on foot. For those looking for a moderate walk that captures the essence of the moors without being too strenuous, these three routes offer a perfect balance of history, scenery, and the opportunity to enjoy a delicious Devonshire treat along the way.
A Victorian Landscape Walk – 5 miles
Start: Meldon Viaduct, west of Okehampton Highlights: Meldon Viaduct, stunning moorland views, Victorian railway history. This picturesque walk begins at the Meldon Viaduct, a stunning feat of Victorian engineering built in the 1870s to carry the old London and South Western Railway main line to Plymouth. Now, the viaduct serves as a walking and cycling route, offering breathtaking views over the northern edge of Dartmoor.
From here, follow the trail along scenic moorland paths and woodland tracks, taking in panoramic views of the Meldon Reservoir and the rolling Dartmoor countryside. The area is rich in industrial heritage, with remnants of former quarries and railway lines adding character to the route.
📍 Where to Stop: After your walk, take a short drive into Okehampton, where you can enjoy a well-earned cream tea at The White Hart or a light lunch at Toast Coffee House, both known for their welcoming atmosphere and delicious homemade fare.
A Walk Across Walkham – 7 miles

Following part of the West Devon Way, this walk begins in Yelverton and takes you through some of Dartmoor’s most enchanting scenery. You’ll follow the gentle course of the River Walkham, before reaching Double Waters, where the Walkham meets the Tavy—a beautiful spot to pause and take in the tranquility. The route then ascends across West Down, offering open views across rolling semi-moorland, before gently descending into Tavistock.
Designed as a one-way route, you can take advantage of the regular bus service between Tavistock and Yelverton for easy access.
