Nestled in the heart of Dartmoor National Park, the landscape surrounding Postbridge provides the perfect setting for exploring one of Britain’s most captivating ancient features. Dartmoor is not only renowned for its rugged tors, sweeping moorlands, and mystical rivers but also for its ancient heritage, with numerous stone circles scattered across the terrain. These enigmatic monuments offer a glimpse into prehistoric times and provide an unforgettable experience for history enthusiasts and curious visitors alike.

The Mystery of Dartmoor’s Stone Circles

Stone circles are one of the most iconic features of Dartmoor, believed to date back to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age (roughly 4,000 to 1,500 BC). Their exact purpose remains a mystery, but many theories suggest they were used for ceremonial purposes, astronomical observations, or as markers of territorial boundaries.

Must-Visit Stone Circles on Dartmoor

Several remarkable stone circles are within easy reach of Postbridge. Here are some must-visit sites, listed from closest to furthest from the village:

  1. Grey Wethers Stone Circles 2 miles from Postbridge. Grey Wethers is a pair of stone circles that stand side by side, an unusual arrangement that makes them particularly striking. Each circle is approximately 33 meters in diameter and contains about 20 stones, many of which were re-erected during a restoration in the early 20th century. These circles are thought to have been used for ceremonial purposes and are aligned in a way that may relate to solar or lunar events.
